On October 25th 1829 Eastern State Penitentiary opened it's imposing Gothic doors. Touted as "the first Penitentiary" Eastern State claimed to revolutionize incarceration by doing away with physical punishment and keeping every prisoner in solitary confinement, but as we all know "the road to hell is paved with good intentions".
